Who’s a nanny?

Nanny is usually a female, who comes to the family’s house and performs her childcare duties or goes back to her own accommodation in the evenings. There two types of nannies – daily nanny or live-in nanny. Our nannies are experienced to care for children of any age, including newborns. They can be required to have sole charge of the children, where both parents are working away from home, or have shared charge, where they are required to work alongside a parent or another nanny. Nannies may also be asked to baby-sit in the evening so the parents can enjoy a night out together. The nanny’s babysitting services are usually paid extra and must be discussed and agreed in advance.

Daily nanny

A daily nanny (also referred to as a live-out nanny) is a person – usually a female, who comes to the family’s house during the day and performs her childcare duties, but goes back to her own accommodation in the evenings. Our daily nannies are experienced to care for children of any age, including newborns. They can be required to have sole charge of the children, where both parents are working away from home, or have shared charge, where they are required to work alongside a parent or another nanny. Daily nanny may also be asked to baby-sit in the evening (outside her standard working hours) providing her with sufficient notice. Her babysitting services are usually paid extra and must be discussed and agreed before employment commencement.

Working hours

  • Usually Full Time – 8-12 hours a day. (Monday to Friday, usually 8am -6pm)
  • Part time – hours to be agreed between you and your daily nanny

Daily nanny duties

  • Daily Nannies are expected to undertake all nursery duties relating to the children only. This means providing care such as bathing, dressing and preparing nutritious meals.
  • Daily live out nanny will be expected to wash, iron and organise the children’s clothes and belongings.
  • She will ensure that toys are clean and safe, organised and tidied away at the end of the day, and the play area kept clean and tidy.
  • Daily nannies will also ensure the children are active and social; for example they will organize play dates, attend baby classes, outings to the park, library etc.
  • A bilingual nanny will use her knowledge and skills to further the children’s development through play. She will provide activities such as creative arts and crafts, construction play, singing, reading and other various learning opportunities.

  • Daily Nannies are not expected to do any heavy housework, family cooking or any other chores not related to the children.

Daily nanny salary

Salary of a daily live out nanny will depend upon age, experience, and the duties involved.

Daily nannies in London with a minimum of 5 years childcare experience will expect salary from £14.00 – £25 + gross per hour for live out role, more for special needs live-out nannies or families with multiple children. Each position is individually negotiated and more experienced or qualified daily nannies may command higher salaries. Rates are dependent on the hours required and the nanny’s experience and qualifications.

  • Live-out Daily Nanny from £14 – £25 hour gross per hour (depending on number of children, duties, etc), or £35000 – £55000 gross per year (based on 50-60 hrs a week for up to 2 children)

The national minimum wage in the UK is currently 10.42 per hour.

Holiday entitlement

Daily nannies are entitled to a minimum of 4-weeks paid holiday. National Bank holidays are given or additional payment is made. Holiday time is taken at a mutually agreed time. If the family requires their childminder to come on holiday with them, then this must be discussed and agreed prior to employment commencement. All travels expenses, food and nanny’s weekly wage will need to be covered.

Live-in nanny

Live-in Nannies are childcares living with your family, or have their accommodation provided and paid for by the host family. Live in nannies provided by our agency will have a minimum of 5 years childcare experience and may also hold childcare qualifications. Most live-in nannies are required to work full time, 8 – 12 hours a day, Monday to Friday. (standard working hours are 8am – 6pm). Live-in Nanny may also babysit 2-3 nights per week, which is included in her salary. Baby-sitting is normally agreed to be taken Monday-Friday. Babysitting over the weekend should be paid extra and this rate should be discussed and agreed before employment.

What are the duties of a Live-in Nanny?

  • Live-in nanny is expected to undertake all nursery duties relating to the children. This means providing care such as playtime and age-related activities, bathing, dressing and preparing nutritious meals.
  • Live-in nanny will also ensure the children are active and social; for example she will organise play dates, attend baby classes, outings to the park, library etc.
  • Live-in nanny will ensure that toys are clean and safe, organised and tidied away at the end of the day, and the play area kept clean and tidy.
  • Live-in nanny will use her knowledge and skills to further the children’s development through play. She will provide activities such as creative arts and crafts, construction play, singing, reading and other various learning opportunities. A Nanny is not expected to do any heavy housework, family cooking, family ironing or any other chores not related to the children, unless required and agreed in her contract.

Accomodation requirement

Live-in nanny requires her own bedroom and bathroom (in some cases they may have to share the bathroom with the children). Occasionally separate accommodation is included as part of the nanny package. Nanny’s room should be furnished and have a television or a computer, a desk and good storage space. House rules should be made clear from the start and also mentioned in the nanny’s contract.

Meals

The live-in nanny’s food is provided and paid for by the employer. The employer should detail the types of food that the family normally buys. The nanny should detail the types of food she likes to eat and if she has any special dietary requirements. The nanny is entitled to request certain foods set within a reasonable budget determined by the employer.

Live-in nanny salary

Salary of a live-in nanny will depend upon age, experience, and the duties involved. From our experience, the average rates will range from £600-£900+ gross per week for full-time live-in roles in London. Nanny’s accommodation and food allowance is part of her weekly package. Each position is individually negotiated and more experienced live-in nannies may command higher salaries. Nannies usually get paid weekly.

Holiday entitlement

Live in nannies are entitled to a minimum of 4-weeks paid holiday. National Bank holidays are given or additional payment is made. Holiday time is taken at a mutually agreed time. Some families agree holiday time using a combination of 2 weeks the Employer chooses and 2 weeks the Employee chooses. If the family requires their childminder to come on holiday with them, then this must be discussed and agreed prior to employment commencement. All travels expenses, food and nanny’s weekly wage will also need to be covered.

Bilingual nanny
